Good Value Year-Round Migration & Safari
Choosing which time of year to see the Great Wildebeest Migration is made easy with this safari. Moving between Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara, this 10-day itinerary ensures that you will be in front-row seats for nature's biggest show and some of its most dramatic chapters, depending on which time of year you choose to visit, such as the birthing season, the great trek, and the treacherous river crossings, complete with giant crocodiles.
This is a Migration itinerary backed up by some of the best wildlife viewing in Africa. When you are not watching the Migration, you will be on the lookout for the Big 5 in the Ngorongoro Crater – lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and elephant – and enjoying diverse wildlife sightings throughout the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Predators – like all the big cats, wild dogs, cheetahs and hyenas – are well represented and the general game viewing and bird watching are excellent.
It is a fly-in safari, saving you several long journeys by road. You are met and assisted each step of the way as you fly between destinations. Small and intimate camps – ideal for romantic travel, and that will appeal to honeymooners and couples – provide the accommodation and you enjoy morning and afternoon game drives with their expert guides. You will be ‘under canvas' for this safari in large, well-furnished tents with their own en suite bathrooms. Simple bucket showers and campfires gives these places give an authentic wilderness feel but you have all the comforts of home in your tent including electric lighting as well as stunning views from your outdoor seating area.

There is plenty to do at the hotel: use the swimming pool, spa and massage service before heading to the cosy lounge with bar and fireplace where you can order a drink and find a seat with a view of Mount Meru – the continent’s second-highest mountain – and toast your arrival in Africa.

The weather in Tanzania was much more tolerable than expected, and the safaris got even better! Both Sanctuary properties were wonderful. The food was delicious, the staff was attentive and amazing, and the locations were superior. Except for the elusive cheetah, there was nothing that we missed. The number of animals in the crater was simply amazing, and even our guide was surprised when driving down to the airstrip we were confronted with 3 large lions… sooooo cool!
After breakfast at the lodge, you are transferred the short distance to Arusha Airport for a flight to the Manyara airstrip and a road transfer to Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp for two nights. Tucked away in a wooded valley close to the Crater rim, this tented camp lies close to the main entrance to the Crater floor, allowing you to be among the first vehicles to enter the next day. The world's largest intact volcanic caldera, the Ngorongoro Crater protects one of Africa's richest concentrations of large animals within its steep walls and is ranked among the best places to see the all of the Big 5 – lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino – in one setting.

In the Serengeti not only did we find much of the North-South migration, but we caught 2 major river crossings and one crocodile take-down…although I learned that you should definitely be careful of what you wish for, as that was hard to see. But what an amazing experience all around. We were very sad to leave. And by the way, our guide, Filbert, was also a photographer, and he help...

Olonana was beautiful. It has been completely remodeled in the past few months. The location of the rooms right on the river is awesome. They don’t have screens in the bedroom area so you can’t really leave the doors open for air. Not an issue for us except it got a little stuffy at times. They are talking about putting in air conditioning.
You cross the border into Kenya today, flying from the Serengeti to Migori and then another flight to Kichwa Tembo, finally checking in at Sanctuary Olonana for three nights. If you have not seen much of the Wildebeest Migration up to now, it will be because the herds are here. Set on a private stretch of the Mara River, Olonana has prime position for the most dramatic chapter of the Migration – the river crossings – when the migrating herds brave the snapping jaws of enormous Nile crocodiles as they make their way from one side to the other. The camp is small and offers attentive, personalised service; your elegant, glass-sided suite comes with a terrace that looks out over the river and its resident hippos as the sounds of the Masai Mara float through the air.
After breakfast you are transferred back to the local airstrip for a scheduled flight to Wilson Airport in Nairobi where you will be met and transferred to your pre-arranged city accommodation or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward flight.
