Known as the tourism capital of Zambia, the town is probably better oriented towards visitors than anywhere else in the country. Named after missionary and explorer David Livingstone, and located only about 10km from the thundering Victoria Falls, the town remained relatively unknown until recently. Political problems in Zimbabwe, however, have led to an influx of tourism on the Zambian side of the falls, and there is a pervading feeling of change and optimism in the air.

It's now a town ringing with the buzz of adrenaline adventure activities from the legendary whitewater rafting to bungy jumping. It's the perfect end, or beginning, to a southern African safari. It's also packed with places to stay: choose from decadent colonial hotels like the Stanley Safari Lodge or more subtle bush lodges such as Sindabezi Island Camp.

Relatively compact, with around 140 000 local inhabitants, Livingstone is easy enough to walk around. If you'd prefer to see the town by taxi, look for the official ones, which are blue with red number plates.

The main street of this quaint colonial town (briefly the capital of Northern Rhodesia from 1911 to 1935) is the important Mosi-oa-Tunya Road, sections of which are lined with classic colonial buildings. These Victorian tin roofed houses with wooden verandas are a typical example of the English settler architecture.

The Livingstone Museum is worth a visit. It is the oldest museum in Zambia, and contains many interesting displays including a collection of David Livingstone memorabilia.
