The Ssese islands are located in the northwest of Lake Victoria. All through the 90s this area was Uganda's most popular backpacker destination. With Lake Bunyonyi's increasing popularity and the suspension of the ferry service from Port Bell (near Kampala) the Ssese islands have seen a dip in tourism.
The archipelago consists of 84 islands, but there are only two islands that regularly receive tourists. These are Buggala and Banda.
Buggala is the largest of the islands, and also the most accessible and developed. Linked to the mainland by a motor ferry, Buggala offers beaches to relax on and forests to explore. The small Banda is privately owned and well-known for the budget resort on it.
Bubeke, Bukasa and Bufumira are among the other islands you could visit relatively easily.
