Uganda » Introduction

Uganda, widely recognised in travel circles as 'Africa's next big thing', is a fascinating country, rich in wildlife, intriguing geographical features and diverse ecosystems that can have you travelling from jungles and mountains, to throbbing cities and small villages scattered across open savannah.

Winston Churchill coined the term 'Pearl of Africa' when visiting Uganda in 1907, a term that travellers are starting to rediscover.

After years of dictatorships, coups, political instability and violence, Uganda has somehow miraculously recovered. The animals are back and the landscape is healing. Travelling here is safe and convenient, and for the opportunity to see gorillas and chimpanzees, this landlocked East African country is a must.

There are numerous tour and safari options for intrepid travellers either wanting to cover as much of the country - or East Africa - as possible, or for those with a specific interest, such as chimpanzee trekking.

You can consider tours as diverse as a four-day safari tracking chimps, watching birds and enjoying the wildlife wonders of Murchison Falls National Park, or the more rugged and longer Gorillas, Game Parks & Zanzibar overland tour that takes in the exotic creatures of Uganda and the exotic beaches of Tanzania's Spice Island.

Accommodation is equally varied and rich in choices. There's plenty of luxury accommodation that will put the finishing touch on your safari experience, and equally there are options for travellers on a tighter budget.

Uganda sports an eccentric ecology of rivers, islands, mountains and forests. From the Ssese Islands on Lake Victoria, travelling west across savannah, until reaching jungle and mountain, the place is an unspoilt paradise of animal, activity and environment.

These days, perhaps Churchill's phrase can be revisited. Like a pearl, Uganda remains largely undiscovered and off the main tourist circuits. Like a pearl, those who seek it out, will be enriched by one of Africa's most memorable treasures.
