Bazaruto Archipelago » Introduction

Mozambique stretches some 2 500km along the east coast of Africa and, scattered off the southern shore of this ribbon-like country, lies the Bazaruto Archipelago: a glittering cluster of five tropical islands .

Benguerra and Bazaruto, the two largest islands, both have luxurious accommodation where you can easily spend a week getting in rhythm with the slow beat of island life: swim, snorkel, eat and sleep.

For those with energy to burn, there are plenty of fantastic activities. In the 1970s some of the islands and the channel were declared a national park, so the marine life is thriving. Two Mile Reef has become world renowned for scuba-diving and snorkelling, while giant trevally, sailfish and marlin are regularly reeled in on game fishing excursions.

Where you choose to stay depends on what you're looking for in your Bazaruto island holiday; Indigo Bay offers plenty of fun family activities; Azura's luxurious villas are a great option for honeymooners; Marlin Lodge has state-of-the-art equipment for keen divers and fishermen; while Benguerra Lodge is a peaceful, sheltered retreat with a Moroccan theme.

If you're looking for a wilder, more remote getaway, venture northwards to another cluster of islands: the Quirimbas Archipelago.

Located near Mozambique's Tanzanian border, the Quirimbas also offers the quintessential tropical island holiday and, what's more, the beautiful, crumbling buildings on Ibo Island give fascinating insight into Mozambique's history and culture.

Getting to Bazaruto is easier than you think. It's just a two-hour flight from Johannesburg to Vilanculos, the springboard for the islands. Now you can also fly directly from the Kruger National Park to Vilanculos in little over an hour.

A few days of sea and sun is also the perfect way to round off a South African safari so, to make it even easier, we've put together a number of great tours, combining big game viewing with pure, tropical relaxation.

With a choice of two tropical islands, both fringed by golden beaches and an impossibly blue sea, a Bazaruto holiday is the ideal cure for frazzled city nerves.
