It's impossible to truly experience the Okavango Delta with a cursory sight-seeing flight and quick game drive. Time and patience is needed: time to unwind and let your senses adjust; patience to wait a while for a hidden leopard to make its move.

Most visitors to the Delta stay a few nights in a lodge, or a combination of several, to enable them to experience all that the Delta has to offer. Standards are very high: excellent guides, management and service staff, great food and superb accommodation in gaspingly dramatic surroundings.

Okavango accommodation is located in both the permanent and seasonal swamp areas, either as predominantly land-based lodges or more water-based camps, so your choice of accommodation should be made based on what kind of experience you wish to have.

A further factor is the changing moods of the seasons: the floods, the dry months, the summer rains all bring a different slant to the Okavango - read more about the best time to visit in our 'When to Go to the Okavango Delta' section.

Land-based lodges are often more focussed on game drives and some may not offer water activities at certain times of year due to varying water levels. The water-based camps usually have a range of boating activities - canoe, motorboat, fishing and so on - all year round.

Our selection of Okavango accommodation also reflects other experiences; whether you're looking for a romantic hideaway, somewhere for a Okavango Delta Honeymoon or an absolutely indulgent blow-out at one of the Delta's exclusive masterpieces, we're sure that we have you covered.

We recommend:

Jao Camp - A remote island location in a private concession, coupled with a staff to guest ratio of 4 to 1 ensures a top Okavango experience at this professionally designed camp. Day and night drives, bush walks and water activities complete the package.

Khwai River Lodge - Raised tents, set under shady trees, overlook the legendary wildlife-packed Khwai River floodplains on the fringe of the Delta. Game drives in the neighbouring Moremi Game Reserve are augmented by river walks, lectures and cultural visits to local villages which all give the visitor a genuine introduction to the Okavango.

Chief's Camp - Located in the predator-rich Mombo concession, this lodge boasts 12 luxurious bush pavilions, each with a private viewing deck. Prepare for action-packed game viewing, but you can always chill out with a swim in the pool and beauty therapy at the spa.
